The home owner is an avid gardener and wanted a greenhouse/sun-room for starting plants. The house, built in the mid 60's, would not have suited a conventional greenhouse so we came up with something a bit different. The lower walls are concrete block (picture 2), clad in red brick veneer. The roof is double- walled acrylic custom cut for the greenhouse. There are two windows low down on the main wall (see picture 6) and two high up on the roof which are temperature-controlled to open or close as required to allow for convective temperature control. The floor is concrete paving stone over a bed of gravel with interior perimeter drainage. This gives good mass for heat moderation as well as a means to remove unwanted ground water.
