This project was one of the more entertaining projects we have ever done. The client is an avid book collector and as you can see from the pictures, also a collector of scale model ships. He wanted a library to display both. But, what you can't see from the pictures is that there is storage behind the half-height bookcases which is accessible by rotating the ship sections. Rotating bookcases are a designer's dream and a builder's nightmare!
When we were approached about this project the clients had a wide hallway leading into their master bedroom. They needed bookcases to house their book collection as well as somewhere to display his ship models. What you can't see is that there is a concrete wall directly behind the wainscoting (below the half-height bookcases). Behind this wall was a four-foot-wide storage area that they needed access to. A simple solution presented itself - hidden access panels! The sections with ship models (light weight) are steel reinforced boxes which rotate on heavy duty low profile swivels (top and bottom). When the ship sections are closed, as in the pictures, you have no idea there is anything behind them. Behind the full-height bookcases is the house's mechanical room. The client lost a small amount of hall space but gained an elegant library.
This project is located in Solana Beach, California
